26.253 - A Pattern Is Not a Law

Something happens again, and suddenly it feels like a permanent fact about you. Another missed opportunity. Another conversation that ends badly. Before long, you have an explanation ready for the next one.
Statistician George E. P. Box understood the usefulness and danger of explanations. His work examined how scientific models, simplified accounts of how something works, could help us understand reality while inevitably leaving things out. An explanation could earn its usefulness without earning the right to go unquestioned. Box, 1979
That distinction matters beyond statistics. We carry working explanations of our relationships, our abilities, and the world we expect to encounter. They help us prepare, recognize trouble, and learn from experience. But an explanation can gradually become a verdict. “This has happened several times” becomes “This is what always happens.” The question is whether the pattern still helps us see clearly, or has begun deciding what we are willing to see.
When “Again” Becomes “Always”
You had something to say. By the time you found an opening, someone else had said it.
The meeting moves on. Later, you replay the moment and tell yourself, “I always do this.” You remember other meetings, other missed openings, other drives home spent rehearsing what you could have said. There is evidence behind the frustration. Yet the sentence reaches further than those memories. It describes who you are and predicts who you will be next time.
Consider what it leaves out. The decision you challenged with someone you trusted. The practical problem you helped a friend untangle. The question you asked when you had enough preparation to feel grounded. None erases the difficulty in that meeting. Together, however, they suggest that your first explanation may be incomplete.
Perhaps you struggle to speak in fast-moving groups, around particular authority figures, or where disagreement has previously carried a cost. Each possibility points toward something different. Preparation might help in one setting. A more deliberate invitation to contribute might help in another. Elsewhere, the problem may be a room in which people routinely interrupt you.
“I always do this” hides those differences. It can turn a situation worth understanding into a personal failing that seems settled.
You do not have to dismiss what keeps happening. You can take it seriously enough to describe it more precisely. Where does the pattern hold? Where does it weaken? What changes between those situations?
“Again” deserves attention. “Always” deserves a closer look.
The Comfort of a Ready-Made Explanation
A familiar explanation saves effort. It gives shape to something confusing and helps us prepare for what might happen next. A personality description offers language for a recurring struggle. A family saying explains a long-running disagreement. A lesson from an earlier job helps us recognize trouble before it grows.
These explanations may contain real insight. The difficulty begins when their usefulness makes us stop examining their limits.
“We are not a family that talks about feelings” may describe a household accurately. Passed down without qualification, it can also become an instruction. Someone who tries to speak honestly is suddenly challenging more than an old habit. They are challenging the family’s account of itself. A pattern that could have been discussed has become a rule everyone is expected to preserve.
The same shift can happen in advice. “I was overlooked when I stayed quiet” becomes “You have to dominate the room to get anywhere.” The experience may be genuine, and the lesson may have helped in a particular workplace. But as the story travels, the conditions disappear. What happened there becomes what supposedly happens everywhere.
We do not pass on experience alone. We pass on our interpretation of it, including the limits we remember to name.
“I learned this in a workplace that rewarded interruption” gives someone a lesson they can weigh against their own circumstances. “This is how the world works” asks them to accept the conclusion before examining the fit.
This is one responsibility of transmission: leaving enough context attached to our experience that someone else can learn from it without being confined by it. The more widely we offer a lesson, the more carefully we need to distinguish what happened from what we believe it proves.
Give the Pattern Its Conditions Back
A more accurate explanation does not have to sound reassuring. “I never manage difficult conversations” gains little from becoming “I can handle anything.” A useful revision names what you have actually noticed: “I tend to avoid difficult conversations when I expect anger and have not decided what I need to say.”
Now there is something to examine. You can consider preparation, timing, support, and whether the other person is willing to engage. You may discover that the setting itself is unsafe or unproductive. Greater precision should help you locate the difficulty, including the parts that are outside your control.
Look beyond the occasions when your explanation appears to fit. Does the same outcome happen when the suspected condition is absent? Do you sometimes expect anger and speak anyway? What differs then? These comparisons may reveal another influence, or show that the relationship is less consistent than you thought.
You will not always discover the cause. You may recognize a reliable pattern while remaining uncertain about what produces it. That is still useful knowledge. An observation can guide a sensible response without supporting a complete explanation of another person, an entire group, or the rest of your life.
An exception does not cancel repeated harm. Occasional kindness does not erase recurring intimidation. One fair decision does not disprove a broader pattern of discrimination. You do not need to establish that something happens every time before taking it seriously, and you do not need a complete explanation before setting a boundary.
The purpose of examining a pattern is to improve the judgment it supports. Sometimes the evidence loosens a belief. Sometimes it strengthens one. A favorable result deserves the same attention: succeeding several times can make a method feel unquestionably sound, even when we have not examined what else helped it work.
Wisdom grows in the distinctions we preserve: what happened, what may explain it, and what remains uncertain. Those distinctions give our own decisions firmer ground and make the lessons we share more honest. We can offer experience with its conditions still attached, leaving another person room to recognize where their circumstances differ.
Keep what the pattern has taught you. Be careful about everything else you have asked it to prove.

Practice: From “Always” to “Under These Conditions”
Choose one everyday statement about yourself that contains always, never, or every time. Begin with a manageable frustration, rather than an experience of harm you feel pressured to explain away.
Give yourself five minutes to begin. Use the following prompts to turn a familiar verdict into an explanation you can examine.
Name the claim. Write the sentence exactly as it usually appears in your mind. Avoid correcting it yet.
Locate the evidence. Describe two or three occasions that support it. Note what happened, where you were, and what was happening around you.
Make a comparison. Recall a similar situation with a different outcome. What changed? If you suspect a particular condition matters, ask whether the difficulty also occurs without it. Leave unanswered questions open.
Revise the explanation. Begin with “Based on what I have noticed so far…” and describe the conditions under which the pattern seems more likely. Treat any proposed cause as a possibility.
Choose what to observe next. Identify one upcoming situation and one detail you will pay attention to. Afterward, return to your statement and decide whether it needs another revision.
For example:
Original claim: “I never finish what I start.”
Revised explanation: “Based on what I have noticed so far, I tend to leave personal projects unfinished when I have not defined a clear endpoint and begin another before completing the first.”
Next observation: “For my current project, I will define one small finished outcome and give it a dedicated work session. Afterward, I will note what helped and what still got in the way.”
One attempt will not prove the explanation. It can give you something more informative than another repetition of the original claim.
Your revision need not be flattering. It should be specific enough to guide attention and open enough to learn from what happens next.
Scientific Context & Summary
The distinction between noticing a pattern and establishing a rule is supported by research on hypothesis testing, sampling, and causal judgment. These approaches examine different ways an explanation can seem convincing before it has been adequately tested.
Confirming examples may fit several explanations. In Peter Wason’s 1960 experiment, participants tried to discover a rule governing sequences of three numbers. Many proposed an incorrect rule after testing examples consistent with it. Those examples also fitted a broader rule, so agreement alone did not distinguish the alternatives. The study illustrates a reasoning problem; its small sample and artificial task do not establish how everyone reasons in daily life. Wason, 1960
Looking for expected cases can still be useful. Joshua Klayman and Young-Won Ha later explained that this “positive test strategy” is not inherently equivalent to confirmation bias. It can be effective, depending on the task and the distribution of cases. The practical question is whether the evidence distinguishes your explanation from another plausible one, rather than merely agreeing with it. Klayman & Ha, 1987
The experiences available to us shape our conclusions. Klaus Fiedler’s analysis examines how judgments depend on samples drawn from the environment and from memory. Even thoughtful reasoning can be limited by an unrepresentative sample. Applied to the meeting example, this invites a question: are you assessing your ability across varied situations, or mainly through a particular kind of meeting and the moments you remember most readily? Co-occurrence does not establish causation. Helena Matute and colleagues review experiments in which people infer causal relationships between unrelated events. A frequent outcome can coincide repeatedly with an action and make that action appear effective. Comparing what happens both with and without the suspected cause helps evaluate the connection, although everyday comparisons rarely isolate every competing influence. Matute et al., 2015
Useful explanations remain revisable. Box’s discussion concerns scientific models that simplify reality while preserving useful information. Its application here is an analogy: an everyday explanation can guide action while remaining conditional and open to correction. Box, 1979
